The Il Cannone celebrates Paganinis legacy with what Larsen believe to be a truly revolutionary sound.
In the design and development process Larsen aim to produce the exceptional but it is only during the testing and trial process with hands-on musicians that we can truly know for certain. The feedback from musicians has confirmed that playability and feel on the fingerboard is excellent with a good resistance to the bow.
Designed to bring out the best in your violin, Il Cannone individual strings and sets are available in two versions. The Medium variant has a more moderate tension with an open, colourful, projecting, richer and powerful sound whilst the Soloist brings a fuller tone, with even more presence and focus.
Descriptions of the sound that Il Cannone sets deliver include: ‘Noble and powerful. A biting tone with real punch. Highly colourful with many intricate harmonics. Clear. Open. Brilliant. A very fast and easy response especially in spicatto.‘
The Il Cannone E string, now available with a dedicated loop option, is made using a unique carbon steel, while the A, D and G strings build on a new, synthetic multi-filament core. The A string is wound with precision rolled aluminium flat wire and the D and G strings are wound with pure silver.
Il Cannone A Options
During the development phase of Il Cannone violin with musicians, Larsen identified two trends in terms of player response. One group of violinists preferred the directness and focus of a set using one prototype A whilst the other group chose the warmer and broader feel of an alternative A variant.
Warm & Broad or Direct & Focused? Larsen have completed an extensive trial testing Il Cannone A options. They listened to your feedback & are pleased to announce that the Il Cannone Warm & Broad A is now available as a permanent option.

What does ball/loop mean?
Some violin E strings and viola A strings come with the option of Loop-end, meaning they are designed for use with hook-type E fittings on tailpieces without a top string fine-tuner. Most student instruments require a ball-end string. Some string manufacturers now product removable ball end strings, and cello strings are all ball-end. Gut strings often have knotted ends.
What is gauge / tension?
Gauge refers to the thickness, or diameter, of the string. The greater the string’s diameter, the heavier it is, affecting tone and response to finger pressure and bowing. Tension is the horizontal force on a string between the nut and the tailpiece. Tension is also affected by the types of metals a string is wound with.
Medium tensions are the most popular choice. These strings are designed to bring a balanced response and tone.
Light or weak strings are thinner, so less tension is required to bring them to pitch. If your violin has a naturally heavy or dark sound quality, you might use light gauge strings to brighten the tone.
Heavy or strong strings require greater tension and they are less responsive but can create a more nuanced tone.
